A rewarding job teaching kindergarten kids
Kindergarten ESL teaching jobs, also known as homeroom, preschool or nursery teaching jobs are an extremely rewarding and exciting job and an opportunity to have a whole lot of fun while playing an important role in a child’s early language and social development. Students are aged from 3 to 6 years old and class sizes can range from 12 to 25 students per class.
Kindergarten students do not have long attention spans so your lessons will be made up of a variety of short activities and interactions, usually no more than 10 minutes each. Kids love to play, so classes incorporate fun English based games, activities, story telling, puppets, songs, dance, drawing and flashcard games to keep things engaging. These days technology plays a big part in the classroom and many schools feature interactive, touch screen whiteboards in the classroom.

Liv Conroy – Nanhai, China
“The children I teach are incredible, without fail they manage to make me laugh every day, they are constantly learning something new and thinking for themselves. I know every one says it but it really is an incredibly rewarding role. I really enjoy the more creative side of teaching, coming up with new games and activities to teach the monthly topics and making different crafts and art pieces with the children.”

A Typical Week Teaching English at a Kindergarten
The schedule teaching English at a kindergarten runs from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm with weekends off. The day is divided into different sections with children sitting down to eat breakfast by 8:30am. This is usually followed by morning exercises, some basic dances and English songs and then two 25 minute English lessons after which the children break for play time. You will have a local teaching assistant in the class with you to help with classroom management and setting up activities.
Lunch and nap time run from 11:15am to 2pm. This is followed by a couple more 25 minute classes and then free play time where the students can make a craft, read a book and get ready to go home.
A typical 25 minute class usually begins with a greeting and warm up song to get everyone’s attention focused on the class and on using English. It is important when teaching kindergarten students to establish consistent routines and class rules so they know what to expect which helps keep the class organized. New vocabulary is then introduced using flashcards and drilling and then these words are used in other activities such as basic role playing and other games that encourage the children to use the words. The class is wrapped up with a review of what was learnt and saying goodbye.
