GS: So, can you tell us a bit about how you first got into English teaching?
VG: When I first came to Beijing I opened an imported grocery store and one of my regular customers who worked for the Ministry of Culture asked me if I could teach office English to the staff at his department and I said yes and that’s how my teaching career began.

GS: What advice do you have for people about the recruitment and interview process when looking for jobs teaching in China?
VG: Here in China employers ask you a few simple questions about your work experience and qualifications during the interview and then there’s the demo class. So make sure to be prepared, be creative, be professional, be confident, be humorous and don’t forget to smile.

Vish Gamage photo 2GS: You are teaching in at Longman in Beijing at the moment, can you tell us about your impressions of the city? What do you like most about living there?
VG: Beijing is the new Land of Opportunities. All of my dreams came true here in Beijing. I met my wife here, my lovely daughter Destiny was born here, I started my own business here, I started my teaching career here, I bought my first apartment here, bought my first car here and I made lots of friends here.

As the cultural and political center of China, what Beijing has to offer is pretty impressive. Ancient wonders like the Great Wall, historical sites such as the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven and the Gate of Heavenly Peace are some of the extraordinary highlights that I visit at least once year. I love the friendly and hospitable Beijingers and since Beijing is one of the 10 safest cities in world, I feel this is the best place to raise my daughter.

Vish Gamage photo 3GS: What do you like most about teaching English at Longman Beijing?
VG: Going to teach at Longman feels like going home, it’s that cozy. Everyone’s very nice and friendly. The principal is not only professional but also very thoughtful. What I like the most about teaching at Longman is that it’s one of the few places that your hard work is appreciated and rewarded.

GS: Can you tell us about your favourite class at the moment?
VG: Well each and every class I teach, I teach with passion and patience. So I enjoy teaching each and every one of my classes and I make sure my students enjoy studying with me.

GS: Talk us through a typical day teaching English in China.
VG: I work from Wednesday to Sunday. On weekdays I work from 1:00pm to 7:30pm and at weekends I teach from 8:30am to 7:30pm. My typical weekday is pretty relaxing. I drive to work after lunch and make sure I get to work before 1pm and when I arrive at school do my lesson plans and surf online for new creative ideas or games. Around 2pm to 3pm we usually have a workshop where we share our experience and new ideas. Then I have VIP class for an hour, then a 40-minute demo and a 90-minute class before I take off at 7:30.

Vish Gamage photo 4GS: What are the teaching resources like there?
VG: Longman has all the resources a teacher needs and more. Our highlight of the classroom is the interactive whiteboard and high tech software to go with it. Our electronic books, flash cards and teaching props make our life much easier and teaching more fun.

GS: How many teachers are there in your school?
VG: Longman has 5 branch schools spread around Beijing and there are 6 full time and 6 part time foreign teachers plus 10 local teachers at the branch that I teach.

Vish Gamage photo 5GS: China is full of surprises and unexpected adventures, tell us about one you have had recently.
VG: Since I came here my life has been a “roller coaster ride”, full of surprises and adventures. But the most recent adventure started eight months ago when my daughter “Destiny” was born. She’s just eight months old and she’s given me plenty of suprises already. A couple of day ago I was amazed when she called me ‘papa’ for the first time and that was her first word ever!
