GS: So, can you tell us a bit about how you first got into English teaching?
AB: After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 2010, I decided to accept an English teaching position with the French government TAPIF program. I was placed in Nice and taught English to high school students for a year. It was an amazing experience and I decided that teaching was an engaging and exciting job. Later, I chose to move to China to teach English so that I could explore another country and learn some Mandarin.

GS: What advice do you have for people about the recruitment and interview process when looking for jobs teaching in China?Anne Burley 350
AB: I would only recommend choosing to teach in China for candidates that are really passionate about teaching. I believe that enjoying a job is crucial to success. Especially for SAT teachers, skills and professionalism is important. Come to the interview prepared in terms of material and dress to impress.

GS: You are teaching in Shanghai at the moment, can you tell us about your impressions of the city? What do you like most about living there?
AB: Shanghai is cosmopolitan and accessible for foreigners. Transportation is easy to access and inexpensive. Although having some Chinese language skills is useful, people without much ability can still get around. There are plenty of cultural activities. Since Shanghai is so huge, there is really something for everyone here.

GS: What do you like most about teaching Test Prep?
AB: I enjoy Test Prep for three reasons. First, the students are amazing. They are focused and intelligent. Helping them with a skill that will allow them to access the American schools that they want to attend is rewarding. Second, the material is intellectually stimulating. For example, I teach US History, SAT, and the SAT Literature subject test, so my schedule is varied and doesn’t get repetitive. Third, because the industry is expanding here in Shanghai, there are a lot of opportunities to take on new responsibilities and grow in a job.

GS: Can you tell us about your favourite class at the moment?
AB: I mostly enjoy teaching SAT Critical Reading to the dedicated and serious students at SUIS (Shanghai United International School). Student participation can make a class very enjoyable for a teacher. I sincerely appreciate the discussions that I have with these students.

GS: Talk us through a typical day teaching in China
AB: My schedule changes frequently, so it is hard to define what a typical day is. On weekends, I usually have four two-hour classes. I start at around 9 and end at around 6. On weekdays, I might teach just one or two classes. On those days, I have office hours, so I go to the New Pathway office and prepare materials for my classes. I develop class materials for a few of my classes.

GS: What are the teaching resources like there?Office 350
AB: From a teacher’s perspective, we develop a lot of our own materials for the SAT classes. The SAT teachers also hold regular training meeting to prepare for our classes. From a student’s perspective, we have both online and classroom SAT materials, so students can practice their skills at home using our online platform and assess their own progress.

GS: How many teachers are there in your organization?
AB: There are many SAT teachers and the numbers are growing. We have a total of 40+ teachers

GS: China is full of surprises and unexpected adventures, tell us about one you have had recently.
AB: Recently I had a great time trying out some new restaurants during Shanghai’s Restaurant Week (which they have in NYC, DC, etc). It was incredible.
